HD Radio has come a long way over these past few years. When it originally came to surface, most people figured that HD Radio would be a lot like HDTV. The fact is that HD Radio is a lot different then HDTV. Unlike many new devices that better a current piece of technology, HD Radio would not take the place of conventional AM and FM radio, instead HD Radio was going to work along side of it. This is a very important element of HD Radio because it allow the conventional signal to operate when the HD signal fades in and out of service.
One of the main functions for the HD Radio was to produce a CD-quality sound or even better. The level of upgrade in sound was suppose to make FM transmission CD-quality, AM transmissions FM quality, and there would be absolutely zero noise such as static, pops, and hisses. It has been a long time since the radio has had an upgrade for sound quality. It is the only digital system to be approved by the FCC for digital AM/FM broadcasts in the US
Along with an increase in sound quality, multicasting quickly became a feature of HD Radio. This means that multiple channels will be sent over a single carrier frequency. This will allow more than one music station and multiple talk radio stations to be transmitted over the same frequency that could only carry one music channel with conventional radio transmission.
